5/19/17 - Citizens Medical Center to expand emergency department [Sport360]

Citizens Medical Center officials are challenged at times to find room for their patients in the current emergency department, the hospital`s chief executive officer said Wednesday.

The hospital`s board approved a design Wednesday for an updated emergency department with a proposed 17,708-square-foot expansion and a 6,192-square-foot renovation. The expansion would be on the west side of the hospital if the design is followed.

"We sometimes will have to put someone in a hallway while we`re waiting for a room to open up, and that`s not acceptable," said Mike Olson, the hospital`s CEO. "Our volume continues to increase, so our capacity need is going up."

The current emergency department has 18 rooms, many of which are separated by curtains, and the new one will have 23 rooms with two trauma and two triage rooms. The rooms will be enclosed, increasing patient privacy.

"You can hear what is going on with the person next to you," Olson said. "We need to correct that situation as well in this design and this process . There is a significant need and opportunity for us to make sure that we have a really well designed and functioning ER to support our long-term objectives of the hospital."

Hospital personnel also struggle with the way the emergency department is designed from a patient flow standpoint, Olson said.

Officials from HKS, a worldwide architectural design firm, and local architect Rawley McCoy designed and presented the proposal at the board meeting.

The design phase could take six to eight months to complete, and construction and renovation of the emergency department could take 12 to 14 months, McCoy said.

The design has been in the planning stages for several months, hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Schulte said. Costs have not yet been determined.

"We are exploring various options for the funding with our board in conjunction with our commissioners, while working with our architects to refine the costs," she said.

Hospital officials are redesigning the emergency department to meet patient needs and growth, Schulte said.

"Our ER will provide our patients with improved patient flow and several new features, including private exam rooms, which we will also have more of, enhanced trauma rooms by size and scope, and a decontamination room," she said.
