3/20/17 - Cause of devastating hospital fire still unknown [Cape Times (South Africa)]

Patients at Swartland Hospital in Malmesbury had to be evacuated to a church and community hall after a fire ravaged a ward, the emergency centre, and operating theatres at the weekend.

The fire started in the general ward, that was closed due to renovations, at about 4pm on Saturday, and soon spread to other parts of the hospital.

The maternity and paediatric wards were not burnt, but were without electricity.

Provincial Health spokesperson for the West Coast District, Leensie Streicher, said 76 patients were evacuated to the Dutch Reformed Church Hall, and the community hall, and were later transferred to Stellenbosch Hospital, Paarl Hospital, Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis, LAPA Munnik Hospital in Porterville, Radie Kotze Hospital in Piketberg and Vredenburg Hospital.

"The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and no injuries or deaths have occurred due to the fire.

"A team of medical and emergency staff, led by the Manager: Medical Services, Dr Barry Smith, is currently transferring patients to surrounding facilities," Streicher said.

Residents yesterday offered support to patients by donating blankets.

Provincial Health Department communications director, Marika Champion, said preliminary investigations revealed it was unlikely that the hospital would open soon.

Malmesbury Community Day Centre will be used as a temporary emergency centre.

"According to a full investigation and assessment, we will issue an update.

"The community will be kept informed at all times and patients will receive alternative services. Thanks to members of hospital staff and community for speedy action and warm-hearted assistance," Champion said.

At the start of this month, the roof of Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg collapsed, reportedly as a result of contractors moving loose rubble and concrete on to a section of the roof that was not able to support the weight.
