5/16/18 - Ken Paxton Lawsuit Against Opioid Manufacturer Not Enough To Combat Texas' Opioid Epidemic

AUSTIN, Texas, May 15 The Texas Democratic Party issued the following press document:

Today Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a lawsuit against an opioid manufacturer.

Opioid Epidemic in Texas:

* 4 of the nation's worst cities for the opioid epidemic are in Texas (Texarkana, Amarillo, Odessa, Longview).

* 93.6 percent of people in Texas needing illicit drug use treatment are not receiving it.

* In 2015, Texas had the second highest total healthcare costs from opioid abuse in the nation ($1.96 billion).

* Experts recommend expanding access to health insurance to access treatment, but Texas leads the nation in the highest uninsured rate and Republicans have not expanded Medicaid.

* According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, opioid-related deaths among Latinos rose 35 percent between 2015 and 2016, and with synthetic opioids, numbers increased 183 percent.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued the following statement:

"Texas communities have been ravaged by the opioid epidemic. Comprehensive action is required, and campaign season announcements including this lawsuit are simply not enough.

"Texans aren't any healthier when politicians talk tough against big pharma, but simultaneously sabotage the entire healthcare system.

"Paxton has proudly touted actions against the Affordable Care Act that would ultimately make it harder for folks to see a doctor and get the treatment they need.

"It's time for the Texas Republican establishment to listen to healthcare advocates and put a comprehensive plan that combats the opioid crisis into action.

"If Texas Republicans genuinely wanted to help those affected by the opioid crisis, they wouldn't lead the charge to strip healthcare away for over a million Texans."
