2/12/19 - Flu cases rise in Tuscaloosa County [The Tuscaloosa News, Ala.]

Feb. 12Flu cases reported at DCH Health System medical centers continued to increase last week as influenza activity remains widespread in the state.

DCH tested 893 people with flulike illness and 253, about 28 percent, were positive for a strain of flu, based on information released by the system for the week beginning Feb. 3. The week was more than double the positive cases from the last week of January. The positive cases reported at the medical centers have rapidly increased since mid-January when there were less than 50. During the first full week of February, there were 109 positive cases.

There were 152 positive cases reported at DCH Regional Medical Center and 101 positive cases at Northport Medical Center. Last year, there were 244 positive cases reported in the same period, or about 25 percent of the tests.

Nine patients are currently admitted in DCH hospitals with the flu, said spokesman Brad Fisher.

The system is requesting that people with symptoms of the flu refrain from or limit hospital visits because of the threat of spreading the virus, especially if visiting patients in ICU, pediatrics or the Women's Center, Fisher said. The visiting policies at DCH may change based on the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Alabama Department of Public Health.

The cases reported by DCH do not represent the total cases for the county, but offer an indicator of the trend for the area.

Flu cases continued to increase in the state in early February. Flu activity remained widespread in the state.
